Northern Ontario Grants

Students & individuals

The honest answer for individuals: there is very little walk-up grant money, because most "youth funding" is paid to employers, not people. Your best move is often handing an employer the subsidy that funds your job, NOHFC and FedNor internship programs are reported at up to roughly $35,000 per year in salary support, and Canada Summer Jobs subsidizes summer wages; in every case the employer applies. What individuals can claim directly: the Northern Health Travel Grant for medical travel over 100 km one-way (a per-kilometre rate, but you pay upfront, and reimbursement delays are reported up to six months), Ontario's Learn and Stay grant (full tuition and book costs upfront for priority health programs at northern campuses, with a return-of-service commitment), the OSAP Distance Grant for studying far from home, and Summer Company (reported up to $3,000) for student-run summer businesses.

NHTG: know the mechanics before you travel

The threshold is 100 km one-way to the nearest specialist care; reimbursement is per-kilometre, claimed after the trip. Keep every receipt and confirmation. A new online claim form has been available since spring 2025 (reported), but budget for the wait, delays are reported up to six months.

Health-program students: Learn and Stay

Full upfront funding for tuition and books in priority health programs (nursing and others) at participating northern institutions, in exchange for a return-of-service commitment, you agree to work in the region after graduating. If you were staying anyway, it's the best deal in the province.

Flip the internship logic

You can't apply for NOHFC or FedNor internship funding yourself, the employer does. But you can bring the program to a northern employer who wasn't planning to hire: a candidate who arrives with a subsidy reported to cover most of their first-year salary is a different conversation.

Student entrepreneurs: Summer Company

Reported up to $3,000 plus mentorship for students running a real summer business, delivered through your local Small Business Enterprise Centre. Competitive, and the plan and training requirements are genuine, treat it as a program, not a payout.

Common questions

  • How does the Northern Health Travel Grant work, and how long does reimbursement take?
  • What pays for school if I stay in the North?
  • I'm a student with a summer business idea, is there funding?
  • How do internship subsidies work if I'm the one looking for the job?

Longer answers are in the guides.

Common questions

Why can't I find grants that pay me directly?

Because the system routes most individual support through institutions and employers, wage subsidies, tuition programs, travel reimbursement. The direct-to-individual list in Northern Ontario is genuinely short: NHTG, student aid (including the Distance Grant), Learn and Stay, and Summer Company are the core of it.

Does Learn and Stay really cover everything?

For eligible priority programs at participating northern campuses, it reportedly covers tuition and book costs upfront, but the return-of-service commitment is binding: you're agreeing to work in an underserved northern community after graduation. Read the service terms as carefully as the benefit.

The NHTG paid less than my costs, is that normal?

Commonly, yes. It's a per-kilometre reimbursement with rules on eligible travel, not a full-cost reimbursement, and you carry the costs upfront. File promptly, keep documentation, and expect the reported multi-month wait.
